Indonesia is a South-east Asian nation with more than 237 million people. The Archipelagic country is the largest in the world with more than 17,000 islands. The five main islands of Indonesia are Java (Jawa), Sumatra, Borneo (Kalimantan, shared with Malaysia and Brunei), Sulawesi (previously commonly known as Celebes) and Papua (Shared with New Guinea). With its vastness naturally comes an abundance of cultures. Each of the 33 provinces has multitudes of traditions ingrained within the lives of the people. The largest and most dominant of them is the Javanese culture due to the influence of ancient kingdoms such as Sriwijaya, although it is the collection of the many cultures from parts of the Java island. Batik cloths and traditional food are just a small part of the Indonesian cultures. In the expansive wilderness of the country exist the second largest biodiversity in the world and rich natural resources. Its pristine beaches (best known in Bali) and majestic volcanoes (such as Gunung Bromo) make Indonesia an ideal travel destination. Last but not least, for there are countless facets of Indonesia, the people are welcoming and friendly, always ready to greet you with a smile. |
